Q
Briefly summarize Anselm’s argument against Roscelin’s view of the Trinity.
A
- Roscelin says that there’s heresy in the christian view. Since it insists on divine simplicity and divine unity, then not just the son but also the father and the holy spirit should be reincarnated. To avoid this problem, he says that God has to be 3 things.
- Anselm responds. he says that God can’t be 3 different persons. thats the Orthodox view. if its 3 different substances, then it means that there’s not just 1 but 3 divines essences and is becomes a polytheistic view therefore it is not christianity anymore.
- criticism is that either Roscelin is just saying what the Orthodox say, or he’s just not christian.
