softwoods are fast growing in colder climates - cheap and easily available
Examples
- Pine - a yellow wood with brown streaks, for fences and cheap furniture

Larch- attractive yellow to reddish brown colour , its harder tougher & more strong than most softwoods, used in fences ect - rot resistant

Spruce is a reddish brown colour - mainly just for structural purposes - not very durable

Hardwoods

Hardwoods grow in warm climates and they’re slow growing- more expensive ,They have a tigher grain so they’re denser and harder than softwood
Examples -
Oak - light brown tough durable strong , used in furniture- very attractive , in interior panels and flooring, however it corrodes steel screws
Mahogany- red brown , durable , expensive because high quality furniture
