Metals alloys and polymers Flashcards
What is a ferrous material
A Metal or alloy made up of or containing mostly iron
Properties of ferrous metals
Mostly magnetic
strong
rusts
Examples of ferrous metals and their properties
Cast Iron - Iron and 2-3.5% carbon and silicone , strong against compression but brittle and not malleable ,car brake disks , bench vices
low carbon steel - iron and 0.05- 0.35% carbon , its strong and cheap , rusts easily but cannot be hardened - car bodies, nuts bolts.
High carbon steel - iron and 0.5-1.5% carbon , - tools , chisels , files , saws
Advantages of non ferrous metals
Don’t rust so they are useful if they are likely to be exposed to moisture
Examples of non ferrous metals
aluminium - lightweight but expensive, hard to join ,not as strong as steel but strong for weight - used in aeroplanes , cans and ladders.
Copper - soft malleable ductile and cood conductor , used in electrical wiring and pipes
high speed steel
H.S.S has iron and 0.6% carbon and other metals and it keeps its hardness at high temperatures , so its used in high speed cutting tools
brass
harder and stronger than both copper and zinc but its made of them both. Its malleable ductile and a good electrical conductor , resistant to corrosion - its non ferrous
stainless steel
Made of Iron carbon chromium and nickel , used in surgical equipment sinks and cutlery
Thermoforming plastics
thermoforming plastics don’t resist heat well so they’re easily formed into different shapes, they’re recyclable and bendy examples could be acrylic, polystyrenes in plastic chairs , washing baskets , plastic bottles ect
Thermosetting plastics
Thermosetting plastics are non recyclable and rigid - when heated they become permanently rigid , used in Electrical fittings and pan handles
