What happened during the first world war for women?

A

Before WW1 women had traditional roles like cleaning, cooking, taking care of the family. During the war however women took on jobs that were traditionally mens, like working in a factory, by the end of the decade there were 10 million women in paid work. This is a 25 percent increase by 1929.

A

Women earned the right to vote in the 1920’s because of their war effort. However they were campaigning for the right to vote for decades already by that point.

A

The League of women voters was established in the 1920’s and encouraged women to contribute to politics.

What were some lifestyle changes that came about?

A

They started wearing different clothes, they abandoned corsets, and wore shorter, looser and often sleeveless dresses. Women to longer required chaperones.

Who were the Flappers?

A

They were a minority group in the 1920’s who were energetic, embracing a lifestyle viewed by many as, un-ladylike, outrageous, as well as dangerous. Flappers were generally upper and middle class women who had the means and money to live this lifestyle.
