What was the Klu Klux Klan?

A

The KKK was formed in the southern states after the civil war (1861-1865).

How and when was the Klan later revived?

A

The Klan was revived in 1915 when the movie Birth of the Nation, produced by D.W Griffiths, came out. This movie was also played in the white house. The movie was set in the south after the Civil war portraying the Klan saving white families from gangs of black people with the intent of looting and rape.

A

The main reason is that one of the leaders of the Klan raped and killed a women on a train in Indiana. Due to that the reputation of the Klan was permanently damaged.

A

These laws were in place to restrict the rights of newly freed slaves. Segregation then became an official policy.

A

White people tried to control them by fear, one of the ways they did this was Lynching.

Where did most of these Klan members come from?

A

Many people who were Klan members came from small towns, white people would lynch black people who they thought had stepped out of line and were legally allowed to punish them because of Jim Crow laws.

A

A

The Harlem Renaissance was the blossoming of African American culture, particularly in the arts, such as literature, drama, music and visual arts.
