It began with Darwin introducing a new theory called the theory of evolutions.

In February 1925 the Tennessee Legislature banned the theory from being taught in public schools.
What was the ACLU?
The American Civil Liberties Union was an organization that believed that this was wrong, and it believed with freedom of speech as well as teachers rights.
What did the ACLU do?
The ACLU offered to pay for any teachers legal fees for any teachers who wanted break the law and teach Darwins theory of evolution
Who was John Scopes?
John Scopes was a science teacher that opposed the law and taught evolution, after a while he was arrested and put on trial.
Who was Clarence Darrow?
Clarence Darrow was John Scopes’ defense attorney, hired by the ACLU.
Who did Clarence Darrow go up against?
Clarence Darrow went up against William Jennings Bryan, A 3 time Presidential Candidate and a former secretary of the Tennessee Legislature.
