What did Americans strongly believe about Native Americans?
US strongly believed that there was only one religion, that was Christianity, they thought that the Native Americans had no religion or worshipped the devil.
What where Native American children forced to do?
Native American children were forced to go to boarding schools, they were given new names, new European hairstyles and if they were found speaking their own language they would get beaten.
What was there main goal for doing this?
They wanted to destroy Native American culture.
How much did the population of Native Americans decrease?
The population went from 1.5 million to 250,000 in the 1920’s.
What did the 1920 census show?
The Census, revealed that most Native Americans lived in extreme poverty, which had a much lower life expectancy than whites, they had worse health, worse education and poorly paying jobs.
What happened to Native Americans that did not want to change their way of life in 1920?
They were forced to move to reservations.
What was the Snyder Act?
The Snyder Act granted Native Americans the right to vote in 1924.
What caused the most reform work to happen for Native Americans in the 1920’s?
The Meriam Report came out in 1928 and it showed the terrible living conditions of Native Americans and how they were treated (life expectancy, health, wealth etc).
What happened because of the Meriam Report of 1928?
It brought a series of recommendations, like abandoning the “Uniform Course of Study”, which stressed white culture.
What big improvement came about in the 1930’s?
The biggest reform came about in 1934 when Roosevelt’s New Deal was introduced.
