Women (CONTEXT) Flashcards
How does poor treatment from Curley relate to the patriarchal world women lived in?
His poor treatment of his wife reflects the patriarchal world in which they lived in. Women were seen as the weaker sex and were constantly objectified. Curley’s Wife’s death wasn’t viewed as a loss for Curley, but more like an attack on his personal property of which he had a reason to take revenge and show his dominance.
What was the role of women?
Women were confined to the private sphere of their rooms and adhering the stereotypical roles. Curley’s Wife is the only woman on the ranch and desperately craves companionship as well as human connection. The fact that Curley and his Wife were never seen together alive reflects the distance in the relationship.
