Life during the Great Depression was seen as a battle to survive which is perhaps why Steinbeck presented some characters weaker than others such as Candy, Crooks, Curley’s Wife. Steinbeck presents these characters with a certain vulnerable position within the social hierarchy which reflects the wider social reality that was present in 1930s America; Steinbeck explores the idea of power and authority alongside the complexities that follow with it.
