How does the elderly and the Great Depression link?

The elderly were hit hard during the Great Depression. Their life savings completely disappeared after the Wall Street Crash and there was no elderly relief before 1935. With very little help provided by the government , it was expected the elderly wouldnt be looked after by their families. The elderly faced tough competition for jobs as unemployment rates reached around 25% and it was even harder on disabled people as unemployment rates reached up to 80% leading up to crushing levels of poverty
