What was Thomas Wolsey early life like?
Born in 1473. Father was a wealthy butcher that provided som a good education. Which was not normal at the time(opposed hierarchical)
What did he do at the age of 15?
In 1488 he gained a university degree at Oxford and studied to become a priest by making the most of his opportunity. (Which led him to be the college’s treasure)
What happens in 1509
He became royal almoner
Which was being in charge of giving charity to the poor.
This made him a member of the royal council. That helped him
Build a personal connection with the king (by doing tedious tasks )
How was the war with france in 1512-1513 significant to wolsey
HenryVIII needed someone to organise an army. It was a complex job but wolsye took it on. And made a well equipped and supplied army to be sent to france. This made him a man that could fulfil HenryVIII will effectively.
What two major events happened in 1515?
Wolsey became the archbishop of York, bishop of Lincoln and cardinal.
He became lord chancellor. That gave him too position in HenryVIII government.
What was the significance in becoming the papel légate in 1518
By representing the pope in England. He was able to outrank all the other English clergy
