Explain the Yorkshire rebellion ? (Pilgrimage of grace)
Started in (1536) 40,000 men. Lead by Robert aske . On (16 October)10,000 pilgrims Raided York . Stating there was no looting
-(19 October) pontefract castle was taken. Leading to castle garrison to join the rebels.
-(27 October) Duke of Norfolk sent to Doncaster bridge with army of 8000 outnumbered by pilgrims army of 30,000. Forced duke to negotiate with pilgrims
Pilgrims instructed long term summon in parliament for pontefract article . HenryVIII promised no more monasteries destroyed. Which convinced the rebels to disbanded
However as they were not. Written dow , Henry believed he could break it. Giving him time to plot revenge
January (1537) a lack of news concerns pilgrims. Caused an uprising in hull. Giving HenryVIII the excuse to punish them. Leaders were rounded up and hang in York by Duke of Norfolk

Religious: north catholic dissolution of smaller monasteries was unforgivable attack. Monks lost purpose and were valued by socioty
Political: disliked Cromwells low birth and reformist views. Hopes to increase court power to remove Cromwell
Economic: rising rents and poor harvests in (1535)(1536) made it hard for commoners
Social: monasteries provided help for poor and rehabilitation for sick. so angered many when dissolved

this represented a clear rejection to kings policies.—pilgrims were strong enough to possibly win.
