Wolsey And Nobility Flashcards
Why did the nobles dislike Wolsey?
He was ‘baseborn’.
They were jealous of his wealth and power.
Example to show that nobles generally tolerated Wolsey?
Wolsey sorted out Brandon’s falling out with Henry over his marriage to Henry’s sister Mary.
What does Starkey say about the relationship between Wolsey and the nobility?
‘the struggle for control between the two was continuous and often bitter’
Why did most nobles support his approach to government?
They believed ‘smaller’ royal government protected their interests better.
When did Buckingham fall?
1521
Why was Buckingham a threat to Henry?
He was a Yorkist claimant to the throne and the most powerful noble in England.
What was Buckingham charged for?
Treason - he had been accused of prophesising Henry’s death
Who presided over the court that condemned Buckingham?
Duke of Norfolk, NOT Wolsey
Further evidence that the fall of Buckingham was not down to Wolsey?
He had been ordered by Henry VIII to spy on Buckingham and 4 other nobles the King didn’t trust - therefore Wol was just following orders, not orchestrating the downfall of a political opponent.
Whose influence was Wolsey worried about?
The minions - young nobles friends with the King in his Privy Chamber
How did he limit their influence?
1519 - planned reform of PC to cut costs, which involved expelling the minions. Henry missed them and brought them back in 1520 as Gentlemen of the PC
1523 - Wol tried to reduce their influence again and sent them abroad to lead armies in 3-pronged attack, came back again
1526 - Eltham Ordinances reduced GotPC from 12 to 6
