wk6 Flashcards
Inferential statistics
statistical tests that make inferences about the data.
whether they are significant differences or relationships
Descriptive statistics
Describe the data
Test statistics
A single number that we will then use to judge if the hypothesis is supported or not
Skewed distribution
It is not symmetrical around the mean
Kurtosis
the pointedness of the distributions.
flat and short = platykurtic
thin and tall = leptokurtic
Null hypothesis significance testing
test the null hypothesis
probability
expressed from 0-1
probability of getting this statistic if the null hypothesis is true.
small probability = infer support for research hypothesis
large probability = research hypothesis has not been supported
alpha level
probability to be less than 0.05
Statistical significance
If the probability associated with the test this distich is listed on the Alpha level it is statistically significant
Type one error
and incorrect reason to reject the null hypothesis. stating that there is an effect when in fact there is no effect
Type II error
Incorrect reason to fail to reject the null hypothesis. state there is no effect when in fact there is one
