wk4 Flashcards
Sample
The participants we test
Population of interest
where the sample comes from. this can be well defined and more specific or loosely defined and less specific
probability sampling
I remember of the population of interest should have an equal chance of taking part
probability: Systematic
Sample every Nth person
probability: Stratified
Subdivided into groups and then sample
Convenience sample
Available volunteering participants
Snowball sampling
Participants recruit other participants
Weird participants
Western educated industrialised rich democratic societies
experimenter bias
behaviour that presents a fair test of the hypothesis. for example smiling and nodding, being more encouraging in certain conditions
Blinding
minimising the extent to which participants can guess the aims.
double-blind
both the experimenter on the participant do not know the aims
this helps minimise subliminal or unconscious effects
standardisation
participants should have as near as identical experience as possible. this minimises the possibility of extraneous variables
pilot studies
The experiment is run with a small number of test participants first. spot potential issues
