Types of false confessions
voluntary, coerced-compliant, coerced-internalized
voluntary
ringing police and telling them you did it- often motivated by wanting to seek attention or fame
coerced-compliant
confessed but don’t believe they did it- responding to stress and pressure from police, protecting someone else
coerced-internalized
confessed and believe they did it- responding to stress and pressure from police, false memories, innocent and vulnerable
