1
Q
What are 3 optiosn for managing coding data?
A
- Microsoft Word
- Use page settings, colour, comments, cut & paste into other documents from original transcript.
- Microsoft Excel
- Use columns & rows to identify themes; subthemes, and extracts
- CAQDAS - Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software.
- Licenced Data Management programs (do not analyse it like STATA – you do that!)
- Australian computer program NVivo – for qualitative data analysis and theory building
- Dedoose
- Used to manage coding but coding still has to be done manually
2
Q
What is an example of coding with microsoft word?
A
3
Q
What is an example of coding using microsoft excel?
A
4
Q
What are 7 steps to prepare yourself to make sense of the qualitative data?
A
- Mind set – be open to discover
- Prepare for a non-linear & iterative process (i.e., backwards & forwards)
- Change mind and re-code
- Typically after transcription, immersion in data occurs
- Familiarising self with data when transcribing
- Listen to audio, read and re-read transcripts to understand data from each participant’s point of view
- Read your researcher’s analytical memos, observational notes
- Guided by the research questions, research protocol and immersion in data, decide what analysis method is most suitable
- Do not need to transcribe irrelevant information
- Check for rigour and reflexivity
- Decide how to manage your data – import to computer or program
- Then begin to code
