Wk 3 Part 1: Online Lecture Qualitative Data Analysis Methods Flashcards
What is qualitative analysis?
simply means to separate something into its component parts or elements
“… the process of deep immersion in the interview transcripts, field notes, and other materials you have collected: systematically organizing these materials into salient themes and patterns; bringing meaning so themes tell a coherent story; and writing it all up so that others can read what you have learned.”
What is transcription?
a process central to qualitative research, however the process is rarely described, and is often taken for granted.
Interviews must be transcribed “____ ” before you can
commence data analysis
verbatim
What is verbatim?
word-for-word reproduction of verbal data, where the written words are an exact replication of the recorded words
What are 4 transcription considerations for interviews?
- It is important to pay attention to interjections such as hm, ah, mmh, yeah, um, and uh as these are intentional and can provide a great deal of insight into the conversation.
- Eg. laugh or period of silence
- Identify each speaker in the interview (ensuring to de-identify the participant)
- Different name, participant 1..etc
- Even the context eg. going to UQ –> going to university
- Include line numbers so you can easily refer to the meaning units in the transcript in later analysis
- If coding by hand, format transcribed interviews with a blank space on right.
What are verbatim transcription conventions?
What is an example of an interview transcription?
