Drugs are classified into categories with other drugs that have similar actions

Analgesia
the inability to feel pain
2 main pain medication types
NSAIDS and opioids
NSAIDS
Non- Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs; treat pain and inflammation; COX 1 and 2; names have an X in them
COX 1
not specific - all tissues; gut and kidneys; see damage and side effects
COX 2
only in damaged tissues; inflammation, pain, fever
opioids
mainly treating pain; controlled drug; end in -phine or -phone
anti-seizure meds
rescue meds; long term meds
seizure
Sudden alteration of behavior due to abnormal electrical activity in the body
List precautions and contraindications to NSAID use
- Not controlled
- Use only one NSAID in an animal-never combine them. Also must
wait 5-7 days if switching between NSAIDs - Do not use with corticosteroids
- Can be toxic to kidneys-decrease renal blood flow
- May cause vomiting and diarrhea
- Can cause gastric ulcers
- Use with caution in cats
- Perform bloodwork prior, after an on-going
- Check kidney and liver values
