Winter Ops + Safety Flashcards
What is the new CSFF FCI?
Lower wing allowed if all are met:
* temperature 4ºC or above
* no precipitation or visible moisture
* tank fuel temperature at -16ºC or above
* all leading devices and control surfaces clean
If these conditions are not met, 3mm thickness allowed;
Upper wing CSFF allowed if all are met:
* CSFF only within the lines
* no ice on leading edges
* temperature 4ºC or above
* no precipitation or visible moisture
* tank fuel temperature -16ºC or above.
Why do we de-ice with engines shut down?
Tactile check only possible with engines closed
5 steps:
* Contamination check
* De-ice/anti-ice procedure
* Post treatment (tactile) check
* Pre-take-off check
* Pre-take-off contamination check.
Define freezing fog.
0ºC or less, and less than 1000m visibility
Define freezing mist.
0ºC or less and more than 1000m visibility
What is the minimum N1 for static run up on TO for NG?
Minimum 70% N1 and confirm stable operation before take-off roll
Boeing states 30s run up is recommended.
What is the minimum N1 for static run up on TO for MAX?
Minimum 50% N1 minimum 5s; confirm stable then advance to take-off thrust.
Who performs the tactile check and when?
On the pre-flight inspection, service provider will do it by indication of the pilot
After de/anti-icing, a tactile check shall be performed by the de-ice supervisor if clear ice has been removed. Pre-take-off contamination check if any doubt exists regarding the effectiveness of the anti-ice treatment by a qualified person.
When to configure for take-off?
At the holding point or after backtrack with no delay expected.
What is the power setting after de-ice?
Limit thrust to the minimum required.
What are icing conditions?
10ºC or below with visible moisture or ice/snow/slush/standing water on ramps, taxiways or runways.
What are freezing conditions?
4ºC or below and visible moisture or ice/snow/slush/standing water on ramps, taxiways or runways.
What to do in case of A/B disarm light on short final?
In auto-land, go-around.
Why is DAR1 and handy dandy on the yoke?
After de/anti-ice, DAR form or equivalent should be clipped to the captain’s control column as a reminder to perform the Pre-take off check.
-2ºC + 500m visibility considerations?
Freezing fog; front and rear side of the fan blades need to be checked.
What if HOT expires?
Anti-ice fluid may have failed and lost its effectiveness. A pre-takeoff contamination check must be completed.
Who does the checklist for de-icing and how?
FO reads challenge and response; CAP acts and repeats response.
How long max after pre-TO contamination check can you depart?
5 minutes.
What is a pre-TO check?
Performed by flight crew from the cockpit before departure; pre-takeoff contamination check performed by qualified person from outside.
When is a pre-takeoff contamination check legally required?
When the hold over time (HOT) has expired.
What are the threats associated with De/anti-icing?
Tail strike + forgetting OPT.
Why is 24k minimum after de-ice?
Tail strike prevention.
What is the benefit of step 2 vs step 1 in de/anti-icing?
One step is a fluid that de/anti-ices simultaneously; two step involves an initial step for de-ice followed by a second step with anti-ice fluid.
When would you cycle the flaps?
Part of the before Taxi checklist in freezing conditions.
What are three reasons we cannot use assumed temperature after de/anti-icing?
Performance, compensate for extra weight on wings, loss of lift due to aerodynamics.
