Protected Designation of Origin
smaller more tightly defined areas
What is PGI?
Protected Geographical Indication
Larger area with fewer regulations (compared to PDO)
What is the interchangeable term for PGI in France?
IGP - Indication géographique protégée
What system of wine law does non-EU countries fall under?
GI - divided into regions, zones, and districts with very limited restrictions.
AVA, Zone, Ward are rarely seen on the label
What is the tradition PGI term in France?
Vin de Pays (VdP)
What are wines without a GI termed in France?
Vin de France
What is the interchangeable term for PDO in France?
Appellation d’origine protégée (AOP) but the tradition term is Appellation d’origine contrôlée (AC or AOC)
What are the 2 main classification systems in Alsace?
Alsace and Alsace Cru
