Wind Patterns Flashcards
Jet stream
A band of very fast moving wind caused by difference in temperature. It is about 10 Km above the ground and moves W to E in N. Hemisphere.
Convection current
Where gases and liquids rise and sink in a circular path
Sea breeze
When warm air from the land rises and cold air from the water sinks
Land breeze
When cold air from the land sinks and warm air from the water rises
Trade winds
Winds that blow towards the equator
Doldrums
A spot near the equator where there and very few winds
La Niña
A band of cool ocean temp that develop off the coast of South America
They can cause droughts
La Nino
Bands of warm ocean temps that develop off the coast of South America. Can warm up climates. Occurs in the Pacific.
Gulf Stream
An ocean current found in the Atlantic hat brings warmer temp to the East Coast of the US
Coriolus Effect
The rotation of the Earth causes a free moving object in the Norther Hemisphere to be deflected to the right and in the Southern Hemisphere to be deflected to the left.
Prevailing winds
Winds that blow predominantly from a single direction over a particular point on the Earth’s surface.
Prevailing westerlies
The prevailing winds from the west to east and are found over the USA.
Polar Easterlies
Dry, cold prevailing winds that blow from high pressure areas of the poles toward low-pressure areas with the Westerlies.
