Interactions With Organisms Flashcards
Energy pyramid
An energy pyramid is a graphical model of energy flow in a community.
10% Rule
The purpose of this model is to simulate the ten percent energy rule in a food chain.
Parasitism
One species benefits from the other species which is harmed
Commensalism
One organism benefits and the other is unaffected
Mutualism
Both species benefits sometimes depends on each other to survive
Primary producer
Organisms that make their own food and are the base of every food chain. They are autotrophs.
Primary consumer
Animals that eat primary producers. They are herbivores.
Secondary consumer
These are animals that consume primary consumers. They are carnivores and omnivores.
Tertiary consumer
A carnivore at the top of the food chain. They feed on secondary consumers.
Decomposer
Organisms that break down dead or decaying organisms. These include bacteria and fungi.
Predator
Wild animals that hunt other animals for meat.
Prey
An animal that is hunted and killed by another animal for food.
Symbiosis
A relationship in which two different organisms live in close association with each other.
