Weather Sybols And Tools Flashcards
Air Mass
A body of air with horizontally uniform temperature, humidity, and pressure.
Continental polar air
Cold temperatures and little moisture are found in this kind of air mass.
Continental tropical air
The air in this kind of mass has low dew points and warm temperatures in the afternoon but has mild temperatures at night.
Maritime polar air
This kind of air mass is cool, moist, and unstable.
Maritime tropical air
These air masses are warm and humid.
Fronts
A front is a boundary separating two air masses of different densities.
Warm front
A warm front is the boundary of an advancing mass of warm air, in particular the leading edge of the warm area of a low pressure system.
Cold front
The boundary of an advancing mass of cold air, in particular the edge of the warm sector of a low-pressure system.
Stationary front
This is a pair of air masses, neither of which is strong enough to replace the other.
Occluded front
This is a composite front is formed when a cold front overtakes a warm front and forces it up.
Weather
Weather is the state of the atmosphere at a given place and time. It defines temperature, humidity, and precipitation.
Climate
The weather conditions prevailing in an area over a long period of time.
Anemometer
An instrument for measuring the speed of the wind.
Rain Guage
An instrument for measuring rain fall.
Wind vain
This tells you the direction the wind is blowing.
