Wildfires Flashcards
Define “wildfire”?
UNCONTROLLED, RURAL fires that clear large areas of land.
Define Crown Fire?
Fire that spreads across tree canopies and affects forested areas.
Define Surface Fire?
Fire that burns on the undergrowth surface.
Define Ground Fire?
The ground burns beneath the surface/ peat.
What is the “ladder effect”?
When the fire spreads upwards from the forest floor to the canopy
What 4 FACTORS favour forest fires?
VEG TYPE= thick undergrowth, eucalyptus and pine have a large oil content
Fauna Characteristics= fine/dry material
Climate= Hot, dry EL NINO which makes a drying action= increased flammability
Fire Behaviour= convection currents support the ladder effect
What THREE things make up the fire/ ignition triangle?
FUEL
HEAT/ IGNITION
OXYGEN
What are the main causes of WILDFIRES?
HUMAN
- arson
- cigarettes
- campfires
NATURAL
- El Nino
- Lightning
- Drought
- Volcanic Eruptions
What affects the Distribution of Wildfires?
NATURAL CYCLES of rainfall and dryness eg: the boreal forests of Canada in SUMMER
Across Africa= a band of widespread burning takes place N to S for Agricultural purposes in the dry season
S-E ASIA= agricultural burning during late winter/ early spring
What 3 FACTORS affect Wildfires?
FUEL
TOPOGRAPHY
WEATHER
How does FUEL affect Wildfires?
-amount =”FUEL LOAD”
- a small fuel load leads to a lack of intensity and the fire moves slowly
- SMALL “FLASHY FUELS” -= burn faster
Arrangement
Moisture Content- can suppress or exacerbate fire spreading
How does Topography affect Wildfires?
SLOPES
Move faster UPHILL than downhill= heat rises in convection currents
How does Weather affect wildfires?
- TEMPERATURE
- WIND= “fire whirls can be created” which in turn cause crown fires
- HEAT= one of the three pillars of the fire triangle
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS?
destruction of habitats and ecosystems
death/ injury of animals
short term surge of co2 and burning releases gg emissions
atmosphere pollution due to smoke and water pollution due to ash in water courses
ECONOMIC IMPACTS?
cost of rebuliding
financial loss
possibility for new employment
