A Multi-hazardous Location Case Study Flashcards
Where are the Philippines?
FAR CASE STUDY
- A group of coastal. low lying islands in S-E Asia
- North of Indonesia
- Made up of 7000 islands
-DESTRUCTIVE/ CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY- where the Eurasian and Philippines plate meet
What is the name of the capital city of the Philippines?
Minila= the population density is the highest
=2000 people/km squared of land
A lower middle income, developing country
=rapidly increasing young population
Name the Volcano that lies on the Philippine fault zone?
PFZ
Mt Pinatubo
Erupted in 1991
Caused the death of 700 people
200,000 left homeless after the eruption
Name the prominent seismic hazard within the Philippines?
-due to the PFZ there are many earthquakes that take place, with many urban settlements found at epicentres= increases damage caused
- Luzon Island Earthquake in 1990
- Killed over 1,500 people
(+ TSUNAMIS= the tsunami in 1997 that hit the Moro Gulf= thousands killed)
Name the tropical storm that took place within the Philippines?
- the Xangsane brought strong winds and heavy rain to the central Philippines after making landfall on the island of Samar. The storm was reported to have had winds gusting to 150km per hour (93 miles per hour) as it made landfall.
- typhoon Xangsane developed in the Pacific ocean and moved westwards- 200 died
How have the population adapted to their multi-hazardous environment?
POPULATION= 109.6 MILLION
- widening rivers near settlements to prevent flooding
- stockpiling food to keep as supplies
- created embankments for floods
- increased public awareness and monitoring of hazards
What did the gov. create/ change in 2009 ?
Before 2009 adaptation and mitigation was inadequate and many would have to wait a long time for economic aid
2009-2010= created the Philippine Disaster and Reduction Management Act
+the National Disaster Risk Management Plan (NDRMP) is being formed
The Act shifted the policy environment and the way the country deals with disasters from mere response to preparedness. RA 10121 provides a comprehensive, all-hazard, multi-sectoral, inter-agency, and community-based approach to disaster risk management through the formulation of the National Disaster Risk Management Framework.
Define archipelago?
- a large group of islands within a circle
eg: the Philippines
What were some of the responses of the 1991 eruption of Mt Pinatubo?
- Philippines National Red Cross (PNRC) creation to help disaster recovery in the future
- the second largest eruption of the twentieth century- lead to 200,000 people evacuated
- use of hazard zonation maps- an alert warning system
Mt Pinatubo Facts?
- 1460 km high volcano
- been dormant for 6000 years before it erupted in 1991
- 20 million tonnes of material into the atmosphere
Where did Storm Desmond take place?
LOCAL CASE STUDY
Took place within the River Eden drainage basin which is located within the N-W of England between the mountains of the lake district and the mountains of the Pennines
Why did Storm Desmond take place?
- An atmospheric plume from the Caribbean to the British Isles
- An anticyclone that caused increased orographic rainfall
How did Political and Social Resilience and Mitigation take place?
-Cumbria County Council has a SCRG
= Strategic Recovery Coordination Group
“working with the local community to restore Cumbria to normality”
What was the resilience group LRF for Strom Desmond?
Local Resilience Forum= the local community benefits from their own views and opinions being heard
What did the Environment Agency provide in response to Storm Desmond?
The chief executive James Bevan (of the environment agency) spoke and was criticised for the response of repeated “plastering” of problems, not immediate recovery.
