Q

What are the main Arminian points?

Bishops, will, salvation, tradition, discretion, ritual

A
  • Bishops are important for supporting the monarchy. The pulpit should be used for preaching the Divine Right of Kings. (Monarch would like this).
  • Free will to change our actions.
  • Double predestination is harsh and Christ’s victory/salvation is for all, not just the elect.
  • Tradition should be kept- the beauty of holiness should be kept to keep a sense of unity between God and the congregation.
  • Too much discretion/disorder at the Parish level.
  • Ritual and ceremonial is needed to maintain an unchanging and continuous social order based on rank and privilege.

Q

What are the key points of Puritans?

Preaching, Uniformity, alters, unfinished, bishop, penal, abuse, disorder

A
  • The word is the only thing of real importance and preaching should be an important part of Anglican worship- to achieve this we need a well educated clergy.
  • Act of Uniformity 1558 was forced on Elizabeth I by Political conservative, a staging post on the road to an English Calvinistic Church.
  • All the existing alters should be taken from the East end of the Church and re-positioned as communion tables among the congregation.
  • English Reformation is unfinished business. They must now ‘purify’ the Church by destroying Catholic influences like vestment and bowing at the name of Jesus.
  • No scriptural basis for Government by bishops and they have to run power through parish minister, especially through the Church court.
  • Anti-Catholic penal laws must be strictly enforced.
  • Church is full of abuses such as pluralism and non-residence which much be put right.
  • Too much discretion and disorder at parish level.
