Why do MSM identify as “straight”?
Sex and romantic relationships are different
“I have sex w/ men BUT I have a girlfriend that I look forward to seeing and I love”
BOTH ARE IMPORTANT TO THEM
= weigh romantic relationships as more important
Just a sexual experience
= doesn’t define identity
Bonding (ex. Like guys coming together for a sports team)
Being gay or bisexual doesnt fit (ex. May have stereotypical ideas of what it “looks like” to be gay)
Coercion
not prejudice alone (ex. They were NOT just hiding who they were)
= finding identity
What are the two main reasons they don’t want to identify as bisexual?
- Partnered to a women
- Want to stay partnered to a women
Why do some men who identify as straight have sex with other men?
They want more sex than they’re getting in marriage
= men have a higher sex drive than women
= men are LESS LIKELY to spread gossip about it compared to women
less likely to get caught
Stereotypes older men
= older women “lose interest”
= maybe think older men will have more of a sex drive (stereotypical view)
Pleasure/submission
“I have a type of pleasure w/ men that i cant have with a women”
What do rural and small-town men prioritize?
Sex with men was mostly irrevelant to rural men’s identities
Their identity FOCUSED on romantic relationships, parenthood,
community, & masculinity
= idea of masculinity is pretty stereotypical
Connected to straight communities
= want to feel like they “fit in” to their community
Note - Some LGBQ [Sic] people but they are typically less visible than in cities
= social dynamics or pressures?
What are the distinct views that rural and small-town men have?
No consequence for masculine identity
Occasional vice (ex. If I smoke a drunk cig = doesn’t mean I am a smoker)
Most physically attracted to women
Romantically interested in women
Sexuality is “___________”
Multidimensional
Sexual identities “_______” over time

Increasing
= due to gender inequality
= seems that heterosexuality is CENTRAL to a mans masculinity
