Why Medicine? Flashcards
Why not a nurse
Nurses are highly trained and intelligent and well skilled however I like the fact that doctors bear the responsibility of making decisions such as prescribing the medication. Nurses aren’t able to perform surgery although there are a large range of options for specialising.
Why not a dentist
Dentists – array of specialties likely to find an area that suits you. Dentists have a broader skill set as part of their practice.
Wider impact of your role out with the clinical practice
Doctors are privileged to see into the patients life, my grandfathers diagnosis inspired me to become someone that can help and support families the same way we were supported. Rewarding nature of helping others
Pros of med
Requesting and reviewing blood tests research and problem-solving elements.
Longer degree allows in depth study of complex systems
Skills
Logic, reasoning, team work
Diverse team
Good patient care stems from group effort. For example when volunteering to help children with additional support needs myself and others worked together collectively to de escalate situations where children often get upset. In the pharmacy sometimes during busy hours we may be looking for a prescription and we all need to work together to ensure good quality patient care is still provided
Challenging career
Over the past few years I have been studying biology and when I went to Pakistan I gained an understanding of how a good doctor can really impact community. During relevant work experience the variety of different treatments carried out in a short time, and their logic and methodology showed me the intellectual challenge that I would relish .
