Why does society need laws? Flashcards
What are four points?
They protect the weaker members of society
People can work and be involved in business
People are protected from violence
People know what sort of behaviour to expect from each other
They protect the weaker members of society
It is easier to take advantage of of the young, sick or elderly so laws prevent this from happening
e.g. In 2007, 7/1000 elderly people were financially exploited
People can work and be involved in business
e.g. people could be fired for no reason and not be compensated, people could take money for selling a house and then not move
This would negatively affect the economy and exploit individuals
People are protected from violence
e.g. murder, rape
This reduces the mental and physical abuse associated with violent crimes and allows people to feel safe as opposed to living in fear. It also means that people who do abuse others are held accountable so that people are discouraged to be violent
People know what sort of behaviour to expect from each other
e.g. everyone drives on the left-hand side of the road, at any speed, they liked and there could be no traffic lights
This keeps people safe and things running smoothly instead of dangerously and in a chaotic manner
