Ensures people are treated fairly
Everyone is equal in the eyes of the law
e.g. Lady Justice, who symbolises justice, is blindfolded to represent justice not be biased
This means that, for example, the wealthy are held accountable for their actions the same as the poor
Guarantees human rights
Human rights are universal and cannot be revoked
Our human rights are protected by law to ensure that the government, for example, cannot deny us them
People who have worked hard for something will get rewarded rather than have it taken away from them
e.g. people who have worked and saved up money for all of their life cannot have their money taken away from them
Punishments given are proportional to the crime committed
e.g. a person stealing food would not get a life sentence in prison
This would weaken society’s respect for the law if justice not proportional
