Collapse of the Herring and Kelp Industry (PUSH)
During WW1, Russia stopped buying fish, causing the collapse of the industries, and changing tastes meant less people wanted fish. loss of jobs and business so people moved to get new jobs.
Highland Clearances (PUSH)
The highland clearances left many highlanders without a home or jobs as landowners replaced them with sheep. People migrated to survive and get new jobs/homes.
The potato blight/famine (PUSH)
Potato was one of the main crops at the time, so failure of potato crop meant people didn’t have enough food to sell or eat. Had to move to survive.
Overpopulation (PUSH)
Most people worked as crofters, due to overpopulation, there was not enough land, lands were often subdivided so they were too small to earn enough money on. People had to move to find higher paying jobs.
Higher wages in city (PULL)
Better pay in the cities and more job opportunities so people migrated.
Industrial Revolution (PULL)
Created new jobs in the cities, and had high pay so people moved to the cities.
Housing conditions (PUSH)
Poor living conditions meant highlanders wanted to move to find better living conditions in urban areas (Blackhouses, shared with animals, leaky roofs etc)
Social opportunities (PULL)
Lack of social opportunities like cinemas and pubs in the highlands so people attracted to cities and a better quality of life
1872 Education Act (PULL)
Made education free and easier to access, good education for children meant better jobs when they are older. Most schools far away in highlands so moved to cities were schools are closer.
