- Criticism from Scot’s for being strike breakers and willing to work for low wages.
- Scot’s feared that it would reduce all average wages or they could lose their jobs
- negative stereotypes, they are drunk, dirty or diseased.
- many were Catholic, and Scot’s were Protestant

- To help them integrate better, some changed their surnames to reflect Scottish names
- however some names were changed by officials without agreement
