Dalhousie introduced Doctrine of Lapse, if no heir, land went to British East India Company. Revolt occurred involving local soldiers and general population. British Empire sent military. Many Scottish regiments took part.
During British reign, India experienced some of the worst famines every recorded. Famine happened because of British policy: most rural workers paid in food or produce so when crops failed there was food shortage and workers lacked means to buy food. Colonial rulers did not suffer and continued to export despite famine.
Colonial rule led to development of vaccines for smallpox and cholera and lots of other medical advancements
British rule modernised industry, education, healthcare, transport but was not always positive.
