Culture and Religion
Brought names with them, Dunedin means New Edinburgh. Dunedin has streets such as Princes Street, St Andrews Street, George street etc.
Mountains named after Scottish names: Ben Nevis, Ben Lomond.
Churches set up, Free Church of Scotland promised well ordered Christian society with good education and Scottish culture
Education
James Andrew, merchant and politician, established training colleges and schools and university of Dunedin. 100 schools founded by him.
Native Societies
Māoris helped white settlers to survive winters including supplying food.
Scot’s wanted land to farm and set up towns so took control of land from Māoris
Treaty of Waitangi stated British agree to protect maori and they can keep land but tricked them and ripped up Māori agreement. Made the Māoris agree the english agreement.
Regular battle over land. Scots sent as missionaries to spread Christianity. Some Māoris became Christian and kept Scot’s Christian and tied to faith. Intermarriage occurred and some missionaries protected Māoris during conflicts.
British siezed 4 million acres of land, Māoris lost 90% of their land. Population of Māoris decreased.
