When Things Go Wrong Flashcards
Cardiovascular disease
A group of disorders that attack the heart and blood vessels
Arteriosclerosis
A cardiovascular disorder that leads to a thickening of the arterial walls
Arteries may lose elasticity and become narrow with fatty buildup (plague) which restricts blood flow and ups blood pressure. Blood clots can form and can cause a heart attack or stroke
Typically occurs with age to prevent is to fix diet and exercise
Heart attack
Cause by a blood clot in a blood vessel in or leading to the heart cause cell death in the section id the heart and can result in death prevention can be surgery to widen the blood vessels. A circulation problem
Cardiac arrest
Can follow a heart attack but commonly caused by coronary artery disease. Lack of blood flow lack of pulse lack of breathing heart completely stops person can die waiting mins with no med attention via hospital and cpr. A electrical problem
Ventricular fibrillation
A condition the the ventricles contract ina rapid unsyncronized way collapse and sudden cardiac death will follows in minutes unless med help is provided immediately but if in time you can convert the rapid heart beating to normal with a defibrillator
Hypertension
The blood pressure is too high can damage blood vessels kidneys cause blindness heart attacks strokes
Hypotension
Low blood pressure can cause blurred vision dizziness fainting oxygen deprivation of tissue
Shock is severe hypotension caused by loss of blood ineffective heart pumping prevention of blood returning to the heart
Heart defects
Can result from an incompletely formed septum weak or leaky valves of other physical abnormalities ina the heart structure can be corrected with surgery
Heart murmur
Caused by faulty in heart valves which permit blood flow against the one way current
Compensate for faulty valves
Heart beats faster
The atria becomes enlarged
Aneurysm
A buldge in the inner wall of an artery causes the wall to weaken and eventually rupture this can lead to a stoke in the brain and can be fatal
Stroke
Cause by a blood clot in a blood vessel in or lead into the brain
Causes cell death in that section of the brain
Can result in paralysis loss of speech memory loss and death
Varicose veins
Caused when one way valves fail and blood pools at the feet surface veins become larger and bulge so they appear like blue lines on the legs often a problem in middle aged women and older
Cardiovascular health
Keep good cardio healthy means good dietary choices
Cardio exercise
And other lifestyle choices
Avoiding LDL bad cholesterol that tends to build up in arteries and forming plague trans fat saturated fats avoid these
Good HDL is required
Artherosclerosis
