Q

Charles desire to be financially independent led him to?

A

Agreeing to the treaty of Dover in 1670 which had a secret clause which meant Louis XIV would secretly fund Charles if he converts to a catholic and suspend P in 1679.
When discovered during the POpish plot this led to fears of absolutism because it meant Charles could potentially rule without Parliament

Q

Overall how sig was financial issues?

2 points

A

> Caused some tension but more in charles reign as i caused direct tension with P
The fact that P was happy to grant JII custom duties for life actually led to the sit where james could easily rule without P, as he was not in war and this contributed to james deposition as he would ignore P laws
