What Type Flashcards
What is a balanced fluid (3)
- LIKE ECF (LRS)
- Contains lactate
- Alkalinizing
What is an unbalanced fluid (2)
- UNLIKE ECF (sodium chloride)
- Acidifying
What are Crystalloid fluids (2)
LRS, sodium chloride, 5% dextrose, hypertonic saline
- Contains electrolytes
- Enters compartments
What is a Colloid fluid
Large molecules that stay in the plasma only, expanding the space longer (increasing BV)
How do you choose the type of crystalloid for replacement therapy
ECF like
What fluid type (category) would be given to a patient with low sodium and high potassium?
Crystalloid
What is the maximum rate of KCl+ Potassium chloride
No more than > 0.5 mEq/ kg/ hr
Sometimes fluids are given empirically based on clinical science…. What does this mean
We choose our fluids based on clinical science (to balance electrolytes) and reevaluate as more information is provided (labs)
Fluid choice depends on the kind of need. What kind of fluid would you give to an animal with persistent vomiting
Something acidifying bc theyre losing hydrochloric acid
Sodium chloride + Potassium chloride since they’re losing them all
What should you always check when giving fluids to a cat bc they can’t metabolize it
Benzoic acid derivitives
(benzyl alcohol)
