Breakdown Timeline:
1827- Liverpool suffered a stoke and resigned.
1828- Gooderich took over but resigned so Wellington became PM.
His ministry was not successful and the Party was split. Liberals led by Huskission and Ultra Tories wanted no reform at all.
During this time there were 3 important pieces of legislation:
-1828 Modification of Corn Laws which slightly reduced the duty on imported corn.
-1928 Repeal of Test and Coorperations Act which reformed the need to be an Angelican to hold Public office -allowed
Protestants not C of E to be MPs and Members of Government.
-1829 Catholic Emancipation (Relief) Act.
Canning as PM
Became PM in Apr 1827 after a liverpool’s death.
He was able and experienced.
Many believe he was too advanced in his ideas, too flamboyant, and some questioned whether he could be trusted.
½ cabinet detested him and refused to serve under him.
Declared his supporr for Catholic Emancipation.
Invited 4 whigs into Caninet.
He died in August 1827
Goderich as PM
Had a successful career as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Liverpool’s government.
Ineffective PM - lacked leadership and political authority. He was appointed reluctantly by George IV after Cannings death in 1827.
Wellington as PM
Him and and people bad aligning Liberal ideas.
He was a resigned military leader.
He fought against Parliamentary reform but introduced Catholic Emancipation Act due to the potential for Civil War in Ireland.
He fell foul of the Ultra Tories.
