A

Created the UK of GB
Untied Dublin and Westminster Parliament.
Catholics in Ireland we’re promised that the laws in England would Change so they could become MPs - didn’t happen until 1929.

A

Ministry opposed parliamentary reform.

Refused Catholic Emancipation discussions.

Some Liberal Tories supported it.

1827: After Castlereagh’s death, Liverpool allowed party discussions.

A

As PM (1827), willing to discuss parliamentary reform.

Faced opposition from Ultra Tories, formed a moderate Whig-Tory ministry.

Died Aug 1827, succeeded by Goderich.

Wellington & the Ultra Tories

A

Goderich failed to unite coalition, resigned Jan 1828.

Ultra Tory, anti-reform Wellington became PM.

Tried to unite groups within the Party, however divides grew along with catholic emancipation.

what was the Co-clare election?

A

1828: Co. Clare election led to a British gov. reshuffle after Versey Fitzgerald (MP) took a new role.

1815: O’Connell opposed Dublin Corporation; his opponent died in a duel.

1823: O’Connell founded Catholic Association, funded by the Catholic rent (1 penny/month).

1828 Co. Clare election caused national unrest, forcing British gov. to grant Catholic Emancipation (April 1829).

A

Enabled Roman catholic to hold public office.

40 shilling freeholders in Irish Counties were disenfranchised.

Reduced number of catholic voters in Ireland to protect the electoral interests of the protestant landlords.

Consequences of Catholic Emancipation.

A

Splits the Tory division.

Allows greater freedom - les repression on Catholics.

Creates a better relationship between Britain and Ireland.

Adheres to some radicals.

1829, 80% of Ireland’s population was Catholic

Catholic Landlords can now become MPs.

Catholic association becomes a model for other reform groups.
