Culture
The belief, ideas and practices of a particular society or group
Norms
Informal rules that influence social behavior
Objectives
Judgments that are not influenced by individuals in different situations
Role
Patterns of behavior expected by individuals in different situations e.g. student and teacher
Social construct
Patterns of behavior based on the norms and expectations of a society
Society
A group of people with a common culture – the term is often used to describe nation states
Values
Important beliefs held by individuals and social groups
Consensus
the idea that society is stable, equal and fair. There is no conflict, and this social order is maintained due to the fact we are all socialized into the same norm and values
Value consensus
how members of society are all in agreement. Individuals all collectively share the same values, so society is harmonious
Anomie
a state of chaos or normlessness. It means that everyone abandons the norms and values, so there is no social order
Meritocracy
the idea that if you work hard, you will be successful
conflict
some sociologists see society as being based on conflict between some groups having more power and control than others. E.g. Marxism
