class Flashcards
social class
a person’s position in society (where they are in the hierarchy) based on their occupation (their job)
stratification
placing people into categories and grouping them all together
Hierarchy
placing people in an order of importance and power from highest to lowest
power
the ability of a person or group to get what they want
upper class
this is the smallest class with the most money, power and status. To be in this class you have to have been born into it or marry into it. Those in this class include the royal family and members of the aristocracy – lords, ladies and duchesses.
middle class
Many believe this is now the biggest class. These are people with professional jobs that nearly always require specific qualifications such as a degree. They are often well paid and society respects the job that they do.
working class
This class includes people who work in manual jobs such as a builder or jobs that do not require qualifications. Many argue these people have less money, status and power than the other classes.
underclass
Sociologists argue that in this class, people are most likely to be unemployed, dependent on the state to survive and live in state housing.
