social processes Flashcards
what is a social process
the various ways in which human beings are affected by their interactions.
E.g. a baby has to be taught norms and values in order to be able to function in society. How the child is taught the norms and values of society will determine their destination and life choices
what is primary socialisation?
Human babies must learn to behave through the process of primary socialisation
Babies respond to the approval and disproval of their parents and learn by coping. This social process equips a growing child with the basics of language and how to behave in society
This takes place in the home
what is secondary socialisation?
As a child grows into an adult, they are influenced by external factors such as school, the media, and their friends
what is a role?
Sociologists believe that each person has different roles. This is the behavior expected of a person in a certain situation.
A person is likely to have lots of different roles at one time.
