questionnaires Flashcards
what are questionnaires / social surveys?
a popular research method that consists of a list of questions. They can be open (allow explanations) or closed question (set answers)
what are self-completion questionnaires
typically completed independently and can be sent out via post or electronically
what is quantitative data
information that is presented numerically
what is qualitative data
information presented visually or in words
what are the advantages of postal questionnaires?
Quick and efficient way of obtaining large amounts of information from large samples (for example, people or households) spread over a wide geographical area
Relatively cheap when compared to interviews
The researcher is not present so respondents may be more willing to answer embarrassing, private or sensitive questions
Ask standardised questions and each respondent answers an identical set of questions answers can be compared and differences can be highlighted. If respondents answer differently, it can be seen as reflecting real differences and opinions between them
Closed question s provide qualitative data and with such statistical data, it is possible to measure the strength of connection between different factors
standardized so replication is possible. This means that postal questionnaires can be replicated or repeated by other researchers to check that the findings are reliable
what are the disadvantages of postal questionnaires
Interviewer is not present to clarify the questions so respondents may misunderstand them
Respondants may not complete all sections of the questionnaire
Never be sure that the right person completed the questionnaire
Postal questionnaires may be suitable for some people such as homeless people and people with literacy problems
