what is it exactly?
a scientific study of behaviour and mental processes, what people think, feel and do. Many scientist differ on what behaviours are important. Scientists agree the study of behaviour must be systematic so that we get legitimate results and not false conclusions.
psychologists seek 4 things….?
describe, explain, predict and influence.
describe?
gather information about behaviour being studied and present what is known.
explain?
why people behave as they do, propose “hypothesis” as assumption or prediction about behaviour that is tested in science, now it to contract a “theory” a complex explanation based on many students.
predict?
take your theory & predict what people think or feel in various situations.
influence?
try and influence or change peoples behaviours. -think about advertising manufactures food industry.
what do psychologist rely on?
the scientific method, facts based on data, data comes from experience, surveys, case studies.
William Wundt?
credited with setting up age first psychology lab in Germany in 1879. his procedure was called “introspection”“……….. and this led the “scientific method”. an individual observes, analyzes and reports their experiences…………

many questions are about behaviour remain unanswered…. and psychological theories are continually reviewed and revised.
