Addiction
substance or behaviour causing feeling of pleasure and change in mood or emotions.
body develops a physical tolerance to the substance/activity so that addict require larger amounts to get the same effect.
3 main signs
craving, withdrawn, continued use even with negative consequences.
main facts
some substances with addictive properties almost universally used and socially accepted. (caffeine and alcohol)
examples of addiction
heroin- need a higher dosage to get the same high as the first time. cocaine doesn’t create tolerance but is far more addictive because craving accelerates to lethal doses.
withdrawal
removal of drug/ activity causes withdrawal symptoms. people can experience withdraw symptoms with certain drugs even if not addicted or dependent. ex. morphine causes flu in some patients.
addiction causes
repeated behaviour, problems, increasing takes a lot of time and energy and addicts usually form obsession with the substances/ behaviour.
what can you be addicted to
non-substances which are usually socially accepted like work, shopping and exercise. others are substances like drugs which are less accepted.

lack of self-control; have to hit rock bottom
addiction to illegal drugs is worse than prescription ones
contemporary view

caused by stress, environment etc.

treatment is support groups (NA/AA), abstinence.

12 steps programs work, structure, displine, abstinence
sponsors provide support/relationships/accountability.

religious aspects can be alienating “in gods hands”
individual is ultimately powerless vs. powerful addiction
biological and environmental factors
genetics and physiology cause addiction, people are more prone to addiction, some have a deficiency in their capacity to resist a substance or activity. (glass or wine vs. binge) etc ready page
