Wilhelm Wundt - experimental psych, the “what” of mental contents - you can study conscious experience if you break it down to its underlying elements or structure
functionalism
William James - believed that the mind could not be broken down to elements because it is much more complex - “how” the mind functions and adapts to demands of the environment

based on unconscious mental processes, while various and often in conflict - deal with hidden conflict by bringing contents of your unconscious into the open consciousness
