psychology is defined as the scientific study of the human thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
what are behaviours?
behaviours are observable actions/directly observable actions.
what are some examples of behaviours?
walking, talking, crying, eating, playing.
what are mental processes?
mental processes are indirectly observable actions.
what are some examples of mental processes?
thinking, feeling, perceiving.
how does science differ from pseudo-science?
in science there is:
- developing hypotheses
- using research to eliminate biases in findings
- systematic/reliable data
- challenging beliefs
- clearly identifies what is being studied
what does a psychologist do?
- cannot admit patients into hospital
- 6-7 years of study
- uses psychotherapy (talking therapies)
- no referral needed
- has a doctorate in psychology.
what does a psychiatrist do?
- doctors
- 13 years of study
- prescribes medications to treat disorders
- referral needed
- can admit patients into hospitals even against there will if medically necessary for their condition.
