cortical lobes. Flashcards
what are cortical lobes?
areas of the cerebral cortex associated with different functions.
how many lobes are in each cerebral hemisphere?
4 lobes
what are the 4 lobes?
frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe, and temporal lobe.
what is the role of the frontal lobe?
attention, estimates, planning, problem solving, controlling emotions, language, movement, expressing emotions, personality, decisions.
what is the role of the parietal lobe?
body senses (somatosensory cortex), attention, spatial resoning.
what is a somatosensory cortex?
located in the parietal lobe, is responsible for processing sensory information from the body, including touch, temperature, pain, and proprioception (body position).
what is the role of the temporal lobe?
memory, facial recognition, sounds, emotional memories and language.
what is the role of the occipital lobe?
visual information, it is divided into many different visual areas, the largest area is the primary visual cortex.
what is the primary visual cortex?
located at the back of each occipital lobe and is the main area of visual information for the two eyes.
what does the occipital lobe do?
each occipital lobe is to select, organise, and integrate visual info.
which area of the cerebral cortex is used?
you turn your head towards a flashing light.
parietal lobe: body senses
which area of the cerebral cortex is used?
you focus your attention on your teacher and filter out any other distractions.
frontal lobe: attention, decision, controlling, movement.
which area of the cerebral cortex is used?
you are watching a movie
occipital lobe: visual information
which area of the cerebral cortex is used?
you are solving a maths problem
frontal lobe: problem-solving, estimates, planning, attention, decision.
which area of the cerebral cortex is used?
you stretch your legs because they are stiff
parietal lobe: body senses
which area of the cerebral cortex is used?
you hear a loud bang
temporal lobe: sounds
