what are depth cues?
visual cues, that allow someone to judge distance or depth of stimuli in their environment.
- allows us to perceive the world in 3D and to judge the distance and position of objects in space.
- since the retinal image is received in a 2D way, seeing in depth requires the application of these depth cues during perception.
what are monocular depth cues?
use only one eye to give information to the brain about depth and distance.
what are the two monocular depth cues?
accommodation and pictorial depth cues.
what is accomodation?
accomodation is the automatic adjustment of the shape of the lens to focus in response to distance changes.
what are pictorial depth cues?
pictorial depth cues are used to create depth and distance on 2D surfaces
(paintings, pics, photos)
what are some pictorial depth cues?
linear perspective, interposition, texture gradient, relative size, height in visual field and motion paralax.
what is depth?
depth adds to perception of objects
what is linear perspective?
linear perspective refers to the appearance of depth caused by the seeming convergence of parallel lines as the move into the distance.
- parallel lines within our visual field appear to meet in the distance but are separated up close.
- e.g: road
what is interposition or overlap?
occurs when one object obscures part of another, the partially obscured object is perceived as more distant than the obscuring one.
- e.g: cards covering each other
what is relative size?
refers to the inclination to perceive the object producing the larger retinal image as closest to us, and the smaller object more distant.
- only effective as a depth cue when two or more similar sized and familiar objects can be compared.
- e.g: 2 people standing at different proximities, objects have to be the same size in real life.
what is texture gradient?
refers to the change in texture which occurs on surfaces as they move into the distance.
- clear, fine detail diminishes distance.
- we rely on the use of texture to judge how far away objects are
- closer = greater the detail of texture.
what is height in visual field?
refers to the perception that objects close to the horizon are more distant than those further away from it.
objects on the ground below the horizon get higher in visual field and appear smaller as they move towards the horizon.
objects in the sky above the horizon get lower in visual field and smaller as they move toward the horizon.
- objects that are closer to the horizon are seen as being further away than those further from the horizon.
what is motion paralax?
things that are close seem to be moving faster/more quickly than things that are far (seem to be moving slower)
